Junior hospital doctors' strike called off (STOP PRESS)

The "Emergencies-only" work to rule due to start at 8am tomorrow, discount Tuesday 1st December, has been called off by the BMA negotiators. An agreement was reached at the conciliation service ACAS late this evening. The employers and the Government have agreed to withdraw the threat of imposing a contract on the junior hospital doctors in exchange for the lifting of the work to rule tomorrow and further strikes in December, and both sides have agreed to continue negotiating for another month to try to reach agreement on the terms of the new contract.

NHS employers agreed to extend the timeframe for the BMA to commence any industrial action by four weeks to 5pm on 13 January 2016 to allow negotiations to progress. But if "meaningful progress" has not been made by then the threat of industrial action remains.
